The Battle

One of the most-watched videos on YouTube shows the struggle of a water buffalo family and herd to save a child. It’s called the Battle at Kruger Park.

It begins with a buffalo mother, father, and child meandering peacefully ahead of the herd, unaware that a pride of six lions are stealthily easing up to attack them. Sensing the danger too late, the water buffalo parents and calf immediately turn and run away. The child cannot keep up and a battle ensues.

Watch the video and then respond to the prompts in a blog comment. Construct your reponses in a Google Doc and then copy & paste over. It should be posted by  10 PM on Sunday.

1. If you could be one of these animals (or any animal), which one would you be? Why? Would you rather be an animal living in a National Park like Kruger or in a zoo?

2. How is this video a lesson in leadership? survival?

3. Using as much descriptive and sensory language as possible, how would you describe this scene/video to someone that had never seen it or couldn't see it? Your response must be no less than 3 paragraphs

4. How could this video be viewed as a metaphor for the human race? Who would the water buffalo represent?  the lions?  the crocodile?

  1. If I could be one of these animals I would be the Lion because they run in packs.they are also a lot meaner than water buffalo. I would rather live in a nationalPark because you can run wild and kill any pray you can get. I like to be able to roam as much as I want.

This is a lesson in leadership because The Buffalo came back to save the little water buffalo and they let him out and saved his life. This is survival because this happens on a daily basis and not all the time they get away. The little water buffalo was lucky that they came back and saved him but that's just part of wild.

If I could explain this to somebody I would tell them this is just part of the wild and I happens every day. This is just nature at its finest and they are just living for their selves. In the wild it's all for one and one for all. No bodies got anybody's back.

This video can be just like high school. The water buffalo represent a bunch of kids and one of them getting thrown on the bus or her and others leaving it behind. The Lions would be the bullies trying to kill it. The alligator could be the principal punishing the little Buffalo because he was involved. Then it's friends come back to save it and be friends again.

  2. 1.I would probably be the water buffalo that came to help get the baby back with its parents because it’s never a bad thing to help others in need. Saving someone from near death would make me feel good about myself that I helped someone in danger. I think I’d rather be in a zoo because I wouldn’t be in the wild where there is more danger than being in the zoo. Although, I do think being in the wild would be cool because you would be free to do whatever and it’s an adventure.

2.I think this video is a lesson in leadership because in situations like that, you have to do what helps you and others around you. If you see someone in danger, then you need to step up and do what’s right and help with whatever it is. Even if it is risky. It’s never wrong thinking and caring for others besides yourself in situations like the buffalo was in.

3.Imagine being a baby animal. Not being able to do things on your own and needing your mother and father for food, shelter, and protection. One day seeing harmful animals and not know what to do. Your parents take off running from you and you try to catch up to them but your legs aren’t strong enough to go farther and you’re captured by six lions. In this video, that’s exactly what happened. The mother, father, and baby were by the river one day and out of nowhere was a herd of lions growling and chasing them. The mother and father took off, while the baby was struggling to catch up and was then took by the lions. They took the baby to the river and was biting at it, then came the crocodile and it did the same then went back into the water. After a few minutes of being tossed around, there came hundreds of water buffalo to try to save the baby. The lions went after the buffalo a few times and then after the buffalo took off and chased the lions away. The baby lived.

4.The water buffalo will present the “Home” team for football. The lions would be the “Visiting” team. The crocodile will be the coach from the Visiting team. The coach goes after the Home team because they won and then they all go after each other.

  3. 1.) If I could be one of the animals it would for sure be the buffalo. Why you ask? Because they are the ones that won and for two I think it would just be better. I also would rather be an animal living in a national park rather than a zoo.
2.) This lesson is a lesson in leadership because once the lion had got the baby buffalo the buffalo went to go get everyone and come back to where they would make the lions scared so they could get their baby back. It was taking charge of what had happened. And it shows that you might have to let some things suffer for a little while to come up with a good outcome. Its better to get hurt a little then to die.
3.) The video starts out with three to four buffalo on one side of the national park and on the other side there are three to four lions. Now the lions start slowly walking closer and closer to the lions not knowing they were there. The buffalo get about right up to the lions noticing that they are there and the buffalo turn the other way and make a run for it. While they are running the lions seen them and they take off after the three to four buffalo. One being a little baby. The lions snatch the baby buffalo and this is where it all begins.
Once they get the little baby buffalo it falls into the water. The lions make a team to try and get this poor little baby out of the water so they can eat it. It takes them awhile to figure it out. A lion is in the water trying to push it up while the rest of the lions are on top trying to drag him out. They finally after hard work get him out. But as they are pulling him out they see an alligator. The alligator is now fighting the lions. The alligator is tugging on the baby buffalos leg while the other lions are on top pulling him the opposite direction. The alligator finally gives up and they make it to the top.
They have the baby buffalo munching away when all of the sudden all these buffalo come herding around the baby and all the lions. One by one the buffalo start getting these lions of this precious little baby buffalo and after they get done running all of them off the baby gets up and runs into the herd of buffalo and they head back to where they were.
4.) A bullying scene. Like the buffalo being the friends. Baby buffalo the one getting bullied. Lions being the bully. Alligator trying to fit in so he decides to bully the baby too.

  4. 1. If you could be one of these animals (or any animal), which one would you be? Why? Would you rather be an animal living in a National Park like Kruger or in a zoo?
I would choose to be the lion out of any animal. I chose the lion because of its ability to take down other animals and their strength. I would much rather live in a National park where I was able to roam and socialize with other animals instead of living in a zoo where all you would ever see is the walls of the confinement you were living in and never be able to roam the earth.

    2. How is this video a lesson in leadership? survival?
The main lion that spots the water buffalo first was the leader. If it were not for him the rest of the lions could have lost the opportunity of a meal to survive. If there wasn't a leader in the pack they would have a hard time coming together to take down predators or find their next meal to eat. I think this video goes to show that in most everything we need a leader, to step up to help us learn and to help get the job done.

    3. Using as much descriptive and sensory language as possible, how would you describe this scene/video to someone that had never seen it or couldn't see it? Your response must be no less than 3 paragraphs.

It was a hot day many animals were lounging around in the hot summer sun. A herd of water buffalo were spotted coming in to get a drink to cool off. When a blurred vision of six lions were located d laying on the bank next to the water pond of water. That is when things started to change. When one of the lions caught a glimpse of the buffalo coming in they went into a crouched position, ready for attack. When a mother, father, and baby buffalo came closer the leader darted off in their direction.
The rest of the lions in the pack followed his lead. The buffalo were grunting in fear of getting attacked, when all of the sudden the baby has been struck and has been taken down. The mother and father get away free leaving their young in the mouths of the lions. When the baby buffalo is taken down by one the rest attack dragging him down into the water. When the unexpected happens, the lions are not the only ones who have a hold of the buffalo. A tug of war breaks out between the pack of lions and an crocodile . The lions drag the buffalo onto land from one side and the crocodile tries dragging him back into the water. The match ends when the pack of lions pulls the buffalo out of the jaws of the crocodile and pull him to land.
Then all of the sudden the lions catch a glimpse of the herd of water buffalo stampeding back. The herd of buffalo start to fight back, running, butting, and kicking at the six lions that have a hold of their young. The lions swat and rawer at the buffalo but before long the buffalo have scared the lions off their young. As the lions run the buffalo continue to run after them to chase them off for good. The baby water buffalo has time to get up, so he does just that miraculous the baby buffalo gets up and runs back into the herd of water buffalo.

    4. How could this video be viewed as a metaphor for the human race? Who would the water buffalo represent? the lions? the crocodile?
I think the lion and crocodile both represent two siblings, and the water buffalo as a toy. One sibling had the toy first like the lion had the buffalo, but then the other sibling want the toy too so they both fight over it until one gives up or wins. Such as the lion and crocodile both fight over the buffalo until the lion wins.

  5. If I could be any animal I would be a bird. although birds do not have a long life they see more than anything else. If I could pick any bird to be I would be a hawk for an eagle. You could fly really high, see many things, and want to have to worry about being hunted.

this video is a good representation of leadership because when the animals stick together they allow the water buffalo to survive. The Lions stuck together and got the water buffalo away from the alligator. But the water buffalo stuck together against the Lions to get back the baby water buffalo. So the lesson is if you stick together you are stronger than your enemy.

the scene starts off as the water buffalo are getting ready to go to water. The Lions are watching the water buffalo. The lines begin chasing the water buffalo, and pick off a little baby. As they chase the baby the baby falls into the water. As the Lions pull on the baby an alligator swims up. The Lions and the alligator are pulling on the water buffalo together, fighting over the baby. Soon the Lions pull the baby up out of the water. One line begins to walk off and the water buffalo chase the lion off. When they realize that they can chase off one line they come back for the second. They chase off the second lion and the baby water buffalo gets up.

The baby water buffalo is like a single person. The Lions are like a bully. The baby water buffalo alone has a hard time standing up to the bullies.but when the whole herd comes back representing friends the bullies are weak and can't do anything. So the metaphor is you are stronger with your friends then you are by yourself.

  6. 1 A.) I would be the buffalo. Buffalo travel in a group. There are leaders and there are followers. I am a follower. I like the idea of a leader to lead us to safety and to search for food. The herd of buffalos would take care of each other and the babies. I guess I am dependent.
    B. I would like to live at the San Diego Zoo. The zookeeper would come by with food and clean water everyday. I would be healthy because they would immunize me from disease. I could sleep, play, and eat without fear and enjoy my day in the sun and away from the cold.
    2. There is always a leader in a group like one lion would attack and the others would follow or herd of buffalos fight as a group because they share the leadership. Animals survive because they travel in a group and fight as a group.
    3. A herd of buffalos were walking next to the river. A herd of lions were crouching in a dead silence while their mouth was moist and hoping to taste the buffalos. The leader of the buffalo saw the lions. The lions jumped up and chased the buffalos and went after the baby buffalo. It took four hairy and muscular lions to get the sweaty buffalo. They worked as a team to get the buffalo up the river bank. A sneaky crocodile tried to get the baby buffalo while the lions pull the buffalo up the river bank. A herd of buffalo charged where the lions where and went after them. The lions fought back. The brave buffalo kicked and chased the lions away.
It took the courage herds of buffalos to fight off the lions and to save the baby buffalo who was still alive. As a group, they fought off the king of the jungle to save the baby.
    4. In the school setting, the lions are the bullies who wants to control the school and the students. They make bad decisions and harsh choices.
-Water buffalo are the students who are weak and can't stand up for themselves. But when they get together they can fight off the bullies
-The crocodile are the students who wants to be a follower and be part of a group. They would stand by and watch others.

  7. 1. If I could be any animal I would choose the lion. The lion is more independent and kills its prey and the lion is more of a predator. I would also choose living in a national park that way Its more open and I could do what I wanted. Living in a zoo you're all caged up and stressed out and its not really the environment you're used to.

    2. This video shows the bulls standing up and fighting off the lions to save the calf. They didn't have to put they are all a family and stick up for each other. It shows that if you stand up for what you want you will win and you will succeed in life.

    3. I was watching this video about water buffalo, lions and crocodiles and it was kinda a crazy scene. The water buffalo were just minding their own business and then these lions were watching them walk to them. The lions had their eyes set on the calf. The bull seen the lions and took off and the lions chased them. They attacked the you calf and they flew into the water beside them.

The pack of lions were trying to keep the calf from running away and they drug it up on the bank and as they were the crocodile jumped at one of the lions! The crocodile wasn't big enough to take a lion so they got out of the water! The lions were finally on the bank with this calf then the whole group of buffalo cane storming over.

The first leading bull ran up and threw one of the lions in the air and it took of running but the others were still there trying to keep the calf! Some how this calf was still alive and it finally got back into the herd and away from the lions. The water buffalo chased the lions for awhile to scare them away and the water buffalo won and got away!

    4. I would say this video is like the Human race because the water buffalo act as the strong willed people willing to help others. The lions were the thief's trying to steal what they could and get away but never manage too. The crocodile was just a scavenger type of person like a homeless person or someone needing food or supplies so they try to get what they can!

  8. 1. If I could choose between any animal within this video, I would probably want to be one of the adult water buffalo. With the adults, there are a ton of them, and they all come together to save that one child water buffalo. So my reasoning would be so that way I have numbers along with me, instead of against me. If I were to choose where I live as a water buffalo, I would want to be at the National Park, instead of the zoo. With the zoo, it might be nice because you won't ever have to worry about food, or getting killed by a lion or predators. But with the National Park, you might have a lot more dangers, but you have full freedom and you also have huge numbers with you.

    2. This video can teach someone a lot about a whole variety of things. One of the big ones would be leadership. At first, the water buffalo run away from the Lions and try to survive. But once they realize that one of the pack's young is being killed, they all must come together. But once they all come together as one, they each takes different paths to get the Lions away.
The next one would be survival. Sure once the young started to get attacked, the others could have left. But instead, they all joined as one. Not only to help get the Lions away, but also to keep the youngest alive so the group has more with them.

    3. First off, I would describe the scene to the person. It first starts if in the hot plains of African. There are three water buffalo. A mother, father, and child. They are walking along the bank of a river when they realize that there is a pack of six lions ahead of them. Being too close to danger, they all turn and try to retreat from the predators. Being that the youngest isn't all too grown up, the lions target the young calf.
As they run, the lions tackle the calf into the river. They begin to try and kill their prey, when out of nowhere two alligators come and start trying to drag the calve into the water. So it now goes to a tug of war between the lions and alligators. But then the lions win, and they drag the calve up on the bank of the river.
Just when you think the lions win, the whole herd of water buffalo come and try to keep the young calf safe. They all combine as one and chase off every lion one by one, until very single lion is fine and the calf is safe.

    4. This video could be interpreted several different ways. The first way, you could turn the water buffalo into something. I think that the water buffalo would represent the people that get bullied, or just the average Joe. Then, you could say that the Lions are the ones that are "better", or the ones that think they rule or are more "important", so they in return pick out the lower part, or in this case the water buffalo. And finally, the crocodiles. The crocodiles could be the people that kind of sneak in and short you. Like someone who would rip you off, or someone that would stab you in the back.

  9. 1) If I could be one of the animals I would be the crocodile because he did get attacked by any other animal. The only the thing that happened to him was that he didn't get the water buffalo. I would also live in a national park that way I would have the freedom and not be cooped up in a cage all the time.

    2) This video is great for showing leadership and how one specific one got to be the leader. The water buffalo that first got attacked ran off, but then they came back with the rest of the family and the leader. The leader lead them all to fight back against the lions. This obviously shows survival skills. Knowing the buffalo wouldn't stand a chance against the lions they went and got back up. Their survival instinct was to run away till they had strength in numbers.

    3) The water buffalo just minding their own business walking along a river. Then the predators attack, out of no where come lions running after the weakest link. The baby running awkwardly on its new legs trying to get away from the lions but can't. The lions latch onto the baby dragging it down to the ground by the water. The other buffalo run off, leaving the baby to die?
Then as the lions are attacking the baby buffalo it tries to run into the river but right when it gets in the lions grab ahold of it again. Meanwhile the river is full of crocodile, one of them notices the action and goes after the baby too. Now we have a tug of war happening between the lions and the crocodile. Eventually with the lions pure strength in numbers they are able to yank it out of the water and drag it into land, then fending off crocodile sending him back to his rightful place.
Then the camera comes over and you see a massive herd of water buffalo. The others have come back to rescue the baby, however they have reinforcements this time. The lions get in front of their newly claimed lunch, trying to pretext it. The massive herd walks toward the lions and outnumbered by a lot the lions still try to fight for the baby buffalo. The herd go in for the baby, attempting to bring back one of their own. The fight is on, remarkably the baby buffalo is still alive and with the help and encouragement of its family it's able to get up and hobble off into the center of the herd. With all that is lost the lions still walk around attempting to maybe get the baby back or to try and take down another buffalo to take its spot. A couple water buffalo stay behind to ward off the lions. Pushing them further and further back until the lions give up. The baby is now safe with its family.

    4) This could be used as a metaphor because, the water buffalo are the citizens, the lions are the government officials, and the crocodile are the outsiders trying to get into the country. The citizens are getting pushed around by the government but if we stand strong as one whole unit they can't defeat us. That needs to be done now but only a small percentage of the population actually does something about it.

  10. If I could choose to be anyone of these animals I would choose to be the water buffalo because they didn’t give up on the baby buffalo, but they helped him. I would rather live in the zoo because I feel like they are being taken care of and there’s no way that they could be eaten by another animal.
This video shows a lesson in leadership because they could have left the buffalo by himself to get eaten but they stopped and helped him away from the crocodiles and lions.
    3. There are a herd of water buffalo hanging around a pond. There are lions creeping up on them from a distance. As the buffalos continue on with there lives the lions start to attack. They ran after the buffalo and got ahold of the baby buffalo.
As the lions are attacking it, they flip into the pond. The baby buffalo is screeching for it’s parents as they ran off. As the lions are dragging it out of the pond, a crocodile jumps up and grabs it real fast. They play tug a war with is for a while until the releases it.
After a few minutes of the lions trying to kill the buffalo, a huge pack comes buffalo came back. They started to run off all of the lions. There were only a couple left on it and the buffalo took control of the situation. All the lions had ran off and the baby water buffalo has lived.
    4. This could be used as a metaphor by the water buffalo being a child that is getting bullied. The lions are bullies around a school area. The crocodile is a teacher that is trying to help the water buffalo but at the same times it’s dragging him down at the same time

  11. 1 I would be the water buffalo because I would help out someone who is in need of help. I would rather be living in the national park instead of the zoo, because in the national park I would be free and in the zoo you cant go anywhere but a cage.
    2. When someone needs help, you go help them out. Instead of leaving them when they need you the most.
    3. well there was three water buffaloes walking to get some water and on the other side there was five loins and they started to chase the baby buffalo. One of the loin finally caught the baby buffalo and pushed the baby in the water.
All of the five loins where trying to kill the buffalo and the loins were trying to get the baby buffalo out of the water. While the loins where trying to get a finial kill on the baby buffalo a crocodile bite the water buffalo out of nowhere.
the loins and crocodile were fighting for the water buffalo. The loins finally got the baby buffalo out of the water and while loins were trying to kill the water buffalo, the baby parents went get got some help from the others buffalo and they chased the loins away from the baby one by one they got the baby buffalo lived.
this video tells us that when some one needs help you help them out instead of leaving them all by there self no matter what the situation is. The buffalo represents the person who needs help and the loin and crocodile are the ones who wont help you out.

  12. 1. If you could be one of these animals (or any animal), which one would you be? Why? Would you rather be an animal living in a National Park like Kruger or in a zoo?

A white Syrian tiger because their beautiful, strong, and amazing creatures.
Zoo because I would be able to live a long healthy life, I wouldn't have to worry about being hunted, and food would be plentiful.

    2. How is this video a lesson in leadership? survival?

It shows that not only do predators have fight but so does the prey they just had to find something worth fighting for and that was their young also shows that larger numbers are the one that will come out on top.

    3. Using as much descriptive and sensory language as possible, how would you describe this scene/video to someone that had never seen it or couldn't see it? Your response must be no less than 3 paragraphs.

First it starts out with the three water buffalo mom, dad, and baby just walking along but what they don't see its these crouched down lions getting ready to attack. The dad water buffalo looked like he seen something but kept going for a few more steps then boom he seen it again only now he knows what it is he bolts out of there like fire hit his tail with the mom, the baby and the lions following after. The lions don't even bother with the bigger water buffalo they go straight for the baby, because they know the baby isn't fast enough or strong enough to get away. They grab on to him by their teeth and claws like four or five fall into the water with the little guy all of them clawing and biting him has still moving as the lions try and carry him out of the river to dry land when out of the water comes a crocodile or alligator and fights to get a hold of the baby water buffalo it grabs on but lets go and the lions successfully drags it to dry ground when the huge herd of water buffalo comes to save the baby one of the buffalo gets real brave and rams into one of the lions and as if ramming him want enough the buffalo chases after him then heads back to the group with his head 7 high like a little kid who just won a fight. The buffalo surround the smaller group of lions and the baby when the water buffalo I think from before just straight on plows into another lion sending him flying into the air the lion lands on another lion kicking off it and running to the left while the other runs to the right at the same time three or so lions are still on the baby

    4. How could this video be viewed as a metaphor for the human race? Who would the water buffalo represent? the lions? the crocodile?
To never give up because if that little guy can make it through all that then you can too. The water buffalo can represent us, the lions can be society trying to bring you down and the crocodile could just be you also bringing yourself down until you're pretty much dead when out of know where your family and friends come and beat them off of you and say its going to be ok Im here for you.
