The important people in Ben's life begin to reveal deep secrets and emotions to him. First it is Dallas, next it will be Rudy and then finally, Coach.
How did Dallas's revelation affect Ben?
Why is it so hard for him to share his secret?
How does Hey-Soos help with this dilemma?
#1 - Your entry should be answer all 3 questions with evidence from the story and it should be at least 2 paragraphs. It is due by 10 PM Thursday, January 28th!
#2 - Select one of your classmate's post and write a 3-5 sentence response to his/her viewpoints. This response should be posted by 10 PM on Friday.

1. Dallas tells Ben that when she was younger her and her uncle had sexual relations. She told Ben this the night that she invited him in for the first time. She told Ben that she thought she was ruined. Ben didn't jugde her by this, the only thing he could think about was telling her that he was dying. Dallas had never told anyone about this before and Ben knew by that she trusted him by telling him. In a way Ben wanted to trust her just as much and tell her that he didn't have long to live. Ben paniced and ask Dallas if she wanted to talk about it more but she said that she didn't.
ReplyDelete2. I think that it is really hard for Ben to share his secret because he doesn't want to hurt anyone. He wants to go about his life and not have anyone treat him any differently. Also he knows that if his mom were to find out she is already bad enough, that she could go off the deep end and lose it for good. Ben wants to play football and wants to be treated normal but he knows as soon as his parent or couch found out he was dying they would have him off the field in a heart beat and would have him in the doctors office doing treatments, which was exactly the opposite of what he wanted to happen.
3. Hey-soos is someone that Ben can feel safe talking to. Ben isn't afraid to question Hey-soos about why he is dying or who are the people that he should be paying attention to. He tells Hey-soos that in a way he is afraid of dying, and he worries about how people are going to remember him. Hey-soos gives Ben advice such as he shouldnet be wording about how people are going to remember him because he has no control over that. I think it helps Ben having someone he can talk to.

She told Ben that she thought she was ruined. Ben didn't judge her by this, the only thing he could think about was telling her that he was dying. She also told Ben that Henry wasn't her younger brother, that he was actually her son. Dallas had never told anyone about this before and Ben knew by that she trusted him by telling him. Also she told Ben that she was thirteen when she had Henry. In a way Ben wanted to trust her just as much and tell her that he didn't have long to live. Ben panicked and ask Dallas if she wanted to talk about it more but she said that she didn't.

I think you did a good job on your responses. You explained everything and used details from the story. Good job.

ReplyDeleteI think it catches Ben off guard. He’s head over heels for Dallas, and when he finds out that she has a kid, it kind of makes him rethink things. Could you imagine what he feels like? Not telling his secret, and then Dallas telling him her biggest one. I wonder if Dallas opening up to Ben, will make him tell his secret to not only her, but everyone else. I think the reason he won’t tell anyone is because he’s afraid that he won’t get to play football and act like any normal teenager would. All this time, he has known that he will die young. So why not live it to the fullest why he can? My opinion would be because of Dallas. Like she said that one night, “she’s the type to… while he’s “not the type to..”. Ben probably thinks that she will leave him like it’s nothing because he has kept it from her this long and still after she told him her biggest secret, he still hasn’t told her. Or that she doesn’t want to have to deal with his illness.
On page 218, Hey-Soos said, “How about considering who you are? Your impact? How about doing the least harm?” I think Hey-Soos is basically telling him to figure it out on his own. It’s his life and he needs to make decisions for himself. He can’t let people tell him what he can or can’t do so why not do it himself. Although, having someone for advice is helpful, I think it’s also good to have that confidence in yourself to know what the right thing to do is. I think Ben will soon figure out that he needs to do what is best for him and his health.
I wonder if be will also open up and tell everyone about his secret. I thought that Dallas telling him her secret would make him run and not talk to her because he may think she's ruined. Good sources and pages.
DeleteKenzie, your response to question one was well done. On the second question I would rethink it a little. I think Ben not wanting to tell his secret is not only because of Dalls but others as well. For example, Rudy McCoy because he's different and Ben would be afraid he'd freak out on him. Then we have question three. I think you might have gotten the wrong page numbers? Hey-Soos was talking to Ben about Dallas and how he should continue to speak to her without being a little disturbed or I might even say angry.
DeleteHow did Dallas's revelation affect Ben? When dallas told him about her feelings and what she felt he didn't even know what to say! He really liked her but at the same time he just didn't know what to think because when they did it it actually meant something to him. Why is it so hard for him to share his secret? Ben doesn't wanna tell her because he really likes her and doesn't wanna hurt her and he may be afraid she will leave. Ben hasn't told anyone but out of anyone he would tell Dallas first I just think he's waiting to see if she actually cares enough. Dallas tells him the truth about them buying his head he's dieing.
ReplyDeleteHow does Hey-Soos help with his dilemma? Hey-soos talks to Ben and tells him that Dallas had told him the truth! He says she told you a big secret and most guys would have jumped and ran but you stayed and she knows you care. Ben is still way to nervous to tell Dallas because he doesn't wanna let her down!
I think that you were right when you say that Ben cares a lot about Dallas and doesn't want to say anything to hurt her or lose her. Yet I don't think you have the real key to what Dallas’s secret is that she is hiding. I think that Hey-soos also helps Ben with a lot more than just Dallas.

DeleteBen wasn’t expecting it coming from Dallas because of what she had said earlier to him. Quite honestly it surprised me as well. An example from the book would be on page 124 and it says, “I wanted to know if I’d be ruined?” The reason I think it is so hard for Ben to share his secret because he wants to die young. He doesn’t want his family and friends stopping him from what he wants to do.
ReplyDeleteOn page 170 Hey-Soos says, “If you want her to hand you yours. You’re not suppose to tell her anything. You’re suppose to make sure you never treat her as if she’s ruined.” Hey-Soos couldn’t have said it any better. I think this made Ben have more sympathy for Dallas and it made him realize how much he truly cares for her. I also want to say that after Ben heard her secret he wants to tell Dallas about his secret. This could possibly mean reconsidering surgery/treatment for himself.
I think you're right. Maybe Dallas or his parents will put him on treatment or maybe even surgery. I think you did a good job explaining everything and in detail.
