  1. His friends that died where an eye opener for him. It could have been him in any of them. One time when he was suppose to go out on a training session but he wasn't feeling good so someone else took his spot. That plane went down and killed his friends. Another time some more airmen went out on a training day and just got off the boat and it crashed. They did not come back and they found out the plane went down just a few miles away. All these events effected him because he knew them and he knew it could be him next. What makes him think more on it is because most deaths are by there own people crashing into each other and plane failures.

  2. When Louie friends went to training for bombing, they noise dived in the ocean right after take off. Louie's lost most of his friends there and he never got to fly with them. They did not even die from war they died for a point less thing. That's what really hurts Louie the most. Also Louie was supposed to go training but he was not feeling good so he stayed and someone else went for him and they ened up dieing. And that got to him even more because he was supposed to be in the plane too so that' will keep hounting him for the rest of his life.

  3. Louie loses many friends throughout the war, it can’t be easy going through such events. One event in particular is when a plane took off from an aircraft carrier, it was a foggy miserable day. They took off fine but quickly got lost in the fog, losing all sense of direction they ended slamming in the water, killing them. These people were friends of Louie’s, not best friends however he knew them. Being in the war with people brings you closer no matter what. You could hate the person but you still sorta care about them. Then you make actual friends that you get very close with, and losing them is like losing a brother. I’m sure Louie felt bad and it hurt him emotionally, any death like that would, however I believe he got past it and didn’t let it bother him. After the war things may have came back. With what he went through if nothing came back and bothered him then he would be extremely lucky. Also even though we aren’t to this point, when his buddies that are on the raft with him die that has to affect him in a huge way. We will find out how once we get to that point in the book.

  4. In one of the events he lost his war friend (Brooks) brooks was killed by serious head trauma. There was not much he could do but tell Brooks he would be ok, while he lay there dying everybody tried helping other people. Zamperini stood protecting brooks as much as he could. Afterwards when they got to safety and brooks and some of the other men were sent to the hospital Phil and Louie processed the damage done to superman while waiting on news about the boys. Later on they found out that brooks had died. Both Phil and Louie went back to Hawaii depressed and sad that most of their crew were gone or dead so neither could fly a plane. I think it put his life into perspective for him, he now wanted something ... To get home. Alive.

  5. He lost friends while in the b24. They got shot by the Japanese while trying to find other men from another plane crash. This effected him because he got the feeling that he was never going to make it back home to his friends and family. Also, emotionally because he knew that he didn't have a long time with all of his crew and friends knowing that life could end anytime .
